The third episode of the programme Por Portas e Janelas (Through Doors and Windows), conceived by Casa da Arquitetura, seeks to point out some of the most relevant contemporary issues. Both in the search for more experienced knowledge and in the search for new architectural practices, around the theme of sustainability and approaches to design and housing. In short, to highlight the transformative power of architecture.
In this episode, we hear from guests Manuel Aires Mateus, architect at the Aires Mateus studio, and Nuno Sampaio, Executive Director of Casa da Arquitetura, moderated by Luís Santiago Baptista.
The transformative power of architecture is the motto for a conversation that develops around contemporary needs, the role of freedom in the synthesis exercises to which we are called, the search for less normative and more universal logics, the need to simplify the legal framework and also emerging ecological concerns. Finally, the importance of dialogue with civil society or, perhaps better, the need to talk about architecture without taking refuge in the themes that are so often associated with it.
Manuel Aires Mateus reminds us of the importance of discussing architecture without getting bogged down in converging themes. To talk about architecture is to talk about the quality and beauty of architecture. Talking about architecture for architecture’s sake. Nuno Sampaio referred to the complex legal framework that surrounds the construction process and the need to cut down on regulations that hinder professional practice.
Every week, a different institution, a different item.
This episode is sponsored by CIN. ‘CIN believes in the transformative power of architecture’.
In the next episode we have a dialogue with MAC/CCB where we take a snapshot of the current situation, mapping out the housing crisis in which we live.
