Por Portas e Janelas (Through Doors and Windows) is a programme about architecture now through the voices of the main institutions that show and discuss it in Portugal.
In the second episode, we bring you Conversas et Al., a cycle of gatherings that brings young architectural studios with insatiable curiosity and an obstinate mind to the Lisbon Architecture Triennale’s Creative Centre. The guiding thread of these episodes is the way of thinking about architecture versus the process of building the work, or the material culture versus the immaterial culture of practice. In each episode, the guest studio brings with it an artefact and an accomplice, and it is these objects that serve as the motto for the conversation.
The first guest at Conversas et Al. is Rui Filipe Pinto, representing Studiolo, who in turn has invited engineer Edgar Brito for an open conversation about the so-called ‘Cardboard Promises’. Cutting out a wall implies a certain violence, pasting a wall implies a commitment. Between the poetic vision of the ‘real promise of reality that will never come’, or Edgar Brito’s pragmatism. Two opposing philosophies of architectural teaching that like to spice each other up. Are the purest ideas those that aren’t built? Listen and choose for yourself.
This talk was part of the first cycle of Conversas et Al., which ran from 21 September 2023 to 18 January 2024. José Mateus and Beatriz Caetano Bento also contributed. A new cycle of conversations at the Triennale’s Cultural Centre is taking place until 31 October 2024 with the same theme.
