The Spirit in the Place

Staying true to his usual style of witnessing ‘imprecise places’, Valter Vinagre represents the spirit that exists in every place. He looks for it in people’s eyes and in their practices, as well as in the environment and atmosphere that surrounds them, made up of a consistency of light, density of colours and matter.

He doesn’t start from reality, but tries to get to reality, working not so much from an idea of the spirit of the place, but above all from the spirit in the place. The photographer is a traveller who goes around the world, looking for the traces of its stories, focusing on the signs of a polymorphous and timeless landscape.

Far from any idealisation or sensationalism, Vinagre renounces the panoramic view or the aerial perspective that fixes the landscape in rigid, ideological coordinates. His gaze is intimate, stripped of the weight of habit, and reveals landscapes that are almost always inhabited by striking presences or filled with dense absences and silences. This density is the distinctive essence of her vision: even in the absence of people, everything seems impregnated by their presence – bodies, breaths, gazes. The images acquire a magical corporeality, sometimes unreal, conveying the charm of silence, stillness and, in some cases, the fascination of solitude.

The exhibition is a visual meditation on presence and absence, on the intimate relationship between spirit and place, an invitation to experience the landscape in a profoundly human way.
