Valter Vinagre

Valter Vinagre was born in Anadia in 1954. He studied photography at AR.CO – Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual in Lisbon, between 1986 and 1989, after starting his professional career. He was a photo reporter for the newspaper Gazeta das Caldas from 1985 to 2001 and a contributor to the newspapers Diário de Notícias from 1988 to 1991, Público from 1992 to 2007, Expresso in 2000 and the magazines Cerâmicas from 1991 to 1998 and Dirigir from 1993 to 1994. He taught photography at ETEO – Escola Técnica Empresarial do Oeste, in Caldas da Rainha from 1992 to 1994.
His career includes the solo exhibitions ‘Cá na Terra’, at the Lisbon Municipal Archive – Photographic in 1998, and ‘Posto de Trabalho’, at the EDP-MAAT Foundation in 2015 and the group exhibitions ‘Matéria para escavação Futura’, at the Sinel de Cordes Palace (Lisbon Architecture Triennale), in 2021, and ‘Uma extensão do Olhar’, at CAV – Visual Arts Centre, Coimbra, in 2005. In 1989, Valter Vinagre was awarded the ‘Pinheiro Manso’ Honourable Mention by the Secretary of State for the Environment and the ‘Galeria Ensaio’ prize at the III Encontros da Imagem in Braga. In 1999 he was awarded the 6th Vila Franca de Xira Biennial Photography Prize and in 2016 the Portuguese Society of Authors‘ Authors’ Prize for Best Photography Work with ‘Posto de trabalho’. His images have been published in numerous catalogues and monographs.
