José Adrião

José Adrião (Lisbon, 1965) is an architect with a degree from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (1991) and a master’s degree from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in the Metropolis programme (2002). Since 2001, he has been a lecturer in the Department of Architecture at the Autonomous University of Lisbon.
Between 2005 and 2009, he was co-director of JA – Jornal Arquitectos, a leading publication on the Portuguese architecture scene.
In 1996, he co-founded JAPP Arquitetos with Pedro Pacheco. In 2002, he set up his own studio, JAA – José Adrião Arquitetos, based in Lisbon, where he has developed a consistent practice in the areas of urban regeneration, public facilities, housing and public space.
His work has been widely recognised, with several prestigious awards, such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s Vilalva Prize (2012) for Fanqueiros, the Valmor Prize – Honourable Mention (2013) for Casa da Severa, and the 2012 AICA Prize from the International Association of Art Critics for his work as a whole. In 2015, he was honoured with the National Urban Rehabilitation Award for the best interventions in the city of Lisbon, with Casa da Severa, and received the BIGMAT 2015 Portugal Award for the same project.
