Duarte Belo

Duarte Belo is a Portuguese photographer and architect, born in Lisbon in 1968. He graduated in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon in 1991. Since 1985, he has dedicated himself to photography, with a focus on documenting the Portuguese landscape and territory. His work is characterised by a systematic and poetic approach, exploring the relationship between human beings and space.
Belo is the author of a vast photographic and editorial oeuvre, including titles such as Portugal: O Sabor da Terra, À Superfície do Tempo: Viagem à Amazónia, Geografia do Caos and A Torre, the latter in collaboration with Maria Inês Cordeiro. In partnership with Álvaro Domingues, he published Paisagem Portuguesa (Portuguese Landscape), an in-depth reflection on the national territory.
His photographic archive, which began in 1985, has over a million images and is being made available online through the ‘Horizonte Portugal’ project. In addition to his artistic practice, Duarte Belo regularly participates in exhibitions, seminars and editorial collaborations, making a significant contribution to thinking about landscape, identity and memory in Portugal.
