Carlos Nogueira

Carlos Nogueira is a Portuguese artist who was born in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo), Mozambique, in 1947. He studied sculpture at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto and painting at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisboa.

Throughout his career, Nogueira has developed a multidisciplinary oeuvre that encompasses sculpture, painting, drawing, performance and installations. His art explores themes such as the relationship between construction and memory, architectural space and natural space, using materials such as wood, stone, iron and glass. Works such as ‘Square house with tree inside’ and ‘Farther and clearer along’ stand out. His artistic production has been recognised with awards such as the Camões Prize at the Vila Nova de Cerveira Biennial in 1980. He also represented Portugal at the Venice Biennale in 1986 and the Milan Architecture Triennale in 1996.
