Carlos Bunga

Carlos Bunga is a Portuguese artist born in Porto in 1976. In 1978, he moved with his family to the Fort of Peniche, which had been transformed into a reception centre for refugees. He lived there for five years before moving to officially protected housing in the same area. In 1998, he began studying Fine Arts at the Caldas da Rainha School of Arts and Design. In 2003, he was honoured with the EDP New Artists Award and, the following year, he took part in Manifesta 5 in San Sebastián, Spain, marking his debut in international exhibitions.
Bunga currently lives and works in Barcelona. His work is characterised by large-scale installations built with simple, ephemeral materials such as cardboard, adhesive tape and house paint, questioning architecture as a language of power and exploring themes such as migration and identity. Throughout his career, he has held several solo and group exhibitions at renowned institutions, including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid and the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt.
