Barnabas Calder
Dr Barnabas Calder is an architectural historian and associate professor at the University of Liverpool, where he leads the History of Architecture Research Cluster, the largest architectural history research group in the UK. He is the author of ‘Raw Concrete: The Beauty of Brutalism’ (2016) and ‘Architecture: From Prehistory to Climate Emergency’ (2021), works that explore the relationship between architecture and energy use throughout history.
Calder’s research focuses on the influence of human energy use on architectural evolution, from the earliest buildings to contemporary challenges related to climate change. He is also curator of an online project dedicated to the work of architect Sir Denys Lasdun, funded by the Graham Foundation, and acts as curator of the Lasdun archive at the RIBA Library of British Architecture.
