José Mateus

Born in Castelo Branco in 1963, José Mateus graduated in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon (FAUTL) in 1986. In 1991, together with his brother Nuno Mateus, he founded the ARX Portugal Arquitectos studio, responsible for emblematic projects such as the Ílhavo Maritime Museum, the Sintra Forum and the Castilho 203 building, the latter nominated for the 2022 Mies van der Rohe Prize.

Since 2007, he has been executive president of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale, having been executive director for the 2007 and 2010 editions. José Mateus also took part as curator in the Portuguese representation at the Venice Biennale in 2010 and has been a member of international juries, including Europan Spain and the European Prize for Urban Public Space.
