atelier local was co-founded by João Paupério (Valongo, 1992) and Maria Rebelo (Porto, 1991) in Valongo, 2019. They have both studied architecture at Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto (FAUP), and worked as architects for Baukunst, in Brussels. João is currently a researcher and PhD candidate at CEAU-FAUP. Maria also worked as an architect at Atelier da Bouça – Filipa Guerreiro e Tiago Correia, arquitectos, in Porto. With atelier local, they have mostly designed and written in and about the periphery, with very little means and a particular interest in the intersection of architecture, economy, ecology, and politics. They co-edited the book “Ceci n’est pas un Portrait” (Circo de Ideias, 2024), together with Ana Luísa Soares and Filipe Magalhães, and authored the book “After five years of living” (exemplo books, 2024). In 2023, the issue of AMAG PT #04 was dedicated to the first works of atelier local, which have also been recognized in several national and international awards, such as Prémios Forma (winner, 2024), the Arquia Foundation Awards (finalist, 2024) or the Lisbon Triennale Début Award (shortlisted, 2025).
