Rock, paper, or scissors is the starting point for the third workshop in the partnership between Antecâmara and Arquitetura Entre Vistas.
Continuing the reflection on representation as both a tool and a form of expression in architecture, we now propose to explore matter itself, as a way to experiment with different forms of representation and ways of thinking about space.
Each session lasts four hours, combining theoretical and practical components. The leader of each workshop will present a theoretical proposal that culminates in a short practical exercise.
Lina Bo Bardi once said: “The architect doesn’t need to draw. They can write.”
We understand — and, in fact, we tend to agree with her. Like Jacques Hondelatte, we do not admire projects that are merely the result of drawing skill, because we enjoy drawing too much to do it without knowing where we intend to go with the project. The most “intense” phase, that is, “the densest part of [our] work certainly happens before the first sketch appears, which [we believe] is already a result.” For that reason, we like “to clearly identify the objectives to be achieved, and the means to be used.”
In other words, we value drawing as a tool to give shape to theory, not as a substitute for it.
When we were invited to prepare a workshop under the theme “rock,” we immediately recalled that it was the first surface used for writing. Therefore, we will not propose that students write on stone, but rather that they write in stone. That is, we will invite them to clearly identify the objectives to be achieved and the means to be used in the future.
To do so, we will provide 40 words and 40 images. Each participant must select one image and one word, transforming them into an aphorism to discuss with the others. Together, these images and aphorisms will form a kind of collective manifesto — one to be crafted by hand and read in an era when our attention span seems to have shrunk to the size of a tweet.
For students and anyone interested.
